Background.
Over the years I’ve worked with many local businesses. They often have a single physical location, but in order to grow they want to start increasing there catchment radius, picking up local customers from further a field.
I’ve also worked with many national businesses that offer a very localised service. The question here is – how do we appear for the local phases users search for without a physical location.

Aim
To test in 2021 local SEO techniques on a new domain and website to test if, and how long it will take to appear for local search terms around a particular topic.
In doing this we’ll be answering the following questions posed by SEO clients regularly.
Questioned asked by clients?
- How long does it take to rank locally?
- Do you need to be local to rank locally?
- Can you rank for multiple locations?
Additional considerations.
- What about duplicate content?
- What about competing against local companies with a GMB?

Methodology
My methodology will evolve over time as we expand out the experiment and test different ways of achieving the experiment.
Timeframe
To give a realistic timeframe I’ll give myself six months. With check in periods on month two and four.
Measurements
I”ll use Google Search Console and Google Analytics to measure the success of the campaign.
Although keyword positioning isn’t something to get hooked up on, I will track the average position over time for the core phrases.
Other things to note
No other forms of digital marketing will be used as part of this experiment. No paid, no social, no PR. This will be a 100% organic experiment using only Tomtomlight domain.
